Because what it describes is not a personal failing but the defining social pathology of this moment. An entire cultural economy that is serving you belonging-as-product and community as content is actually adamant on brainwashing you further. All around, you’ll notice people expend considerable energy performing their investment in culture by posting it, wearing it and consuming it with visible intensity. But, very few people produce culture or even show it when it costs them something.

As it turns out, the village has become symbolic but the villager is almost nowhere to be found.

‘Performing community’ isn’t exactly cynical. It’s far stranger and even more damaging than you might think. Why? Because the genuine hunger for connection has been completely routed through the logic of consumption. So much so that people have lost the capacity to distinguish between participating in something and purchasing a relationship to it.

Alas, this workshop isn’t designed or optimised to make you feel better about that. Instead, it demands that we think through it with precision and criticality.

We will be using three frameworks to accomplish this:

- Alfred Adler's psychology of community.
- Popular music cultures like hip-hop and techno.
- B.R. Ambedkar's political philosophy.

We use those frameworks because the friction between them is exactly where the argument gets sharp enough to be useful. By the end you should know something more specific, not more comforting, about what the village is, who the villager actually is, and what it would genuinely cost to become one.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0083/6730/8855/files/10_96457aad-08a1-48c9-81b0-738852d13e6d.png?v=1780902597
https://themethod.art/products/everyone-wants-a-village-nobody-wants-to-be-a-villager-sun-14th-jun-method-kala-ghoda
