They are one of the primary mechanisms through which power organises consent. They run the whole spectrum, from how we speak to each other to how governments and corporations use them to push warped versions of the truth. And the tradition of turning them back is long.

The Situationists called it détournement: hijacking the language of the spectacle against itself.

ACT UP's SILENCE=DEATH, three words and an inverted pink triangle, turned grief into demand.

The Black Arts Movement insisted aesthetics was politics, that every cultural choice was a political one.

From Underground Resistance to Public Enemy to Wu-Tang Clan, symbols have stood for work and action.

The belief that participation matters is being worn down, and not by accident. We are told the future is open but are made, day after day, to feel it is closed. The resulting exhaustion is not the ordinary tiredness of doing too much. Rather, it is the manufactured kind that arrives when wanting a different world starts to feel naive.

It tricks us by taking a problem built into the system and handing it back to you as a private failing. So, the overwhelmed stop showing up.

We work the other way. Over the session we build a small shared language, a set of symbols, a counter-grammar. It did not exist in the room before you arrived. It leaves with you.

Creativity here does no decorating. It is how we think our way out. The workshop opens with a diagnosis and closes with we actually build for ourselves.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0083/6730/8855/files/1_2bb50d15-282a-40ea-b736-acc9a6b3c4fe.png?v=1783482514
https://themethod.art/products/workshop-symbols-the-grammar-of-resistance-sun-12-jul-method-kala-ghoda
