Bheeshma

Bheeshma Sharma (b.1993) is a Visual artist and Sculptor based out of Imphal, Manipur. His work takes inspiration from a diverse range of subjects including plate tectonics, sustainable development, ecology, conservation and regional geopolitics with some directly connected to his homeland. Living on one of the most active fault lines in the world, his desire to investigate earthquakes by looking through a scientific lens did make it into his art after a major earthquake caused havoc in his immediate neighborhood in 2016. Taking inspiration from the events, he moved on creating works that bears the burden of ancestry, family history and personal anecdotes.

His works in Sculpture, Installation, drawings and photography depict eerie landscapes that envisage a far-fetched dream instigating balance and transformation. His interest in interlocked, diagonally attached structures explores beauty in complexity and nostalgia. A dire attempt to depict landscapes in forms that offers varied perspectives. The material sourced from his ancestral home brings back physicality and existence to the viewer, connecting to the history of the land. Having put craftmanship in details resembling beams and silhouettes, the raw structures often highlight the essence of livelihood and dependence.
