Mitali Das

Mitali Das (Nadia, West Bengal) is a Kolkata-based visual artist with an MFA in Painting from Rabindra Bharati University. Her work explores themes of identity, femininity, and transformation, delving into the evolving human form and emotional vulnerability. Through her practice, Mitali seeks to challenge societal perceptions of the body and self, creating poignant and evocative visual narratives.

Her creative interest revolves around the areas of the self, the feminine body and sexuality. Mitali's work arrives from a place of fears and fantasies related to mortality, physical transformation and states of emotional crisis. The fear of loosening of the skin, the growth of excess bodily hair, gradual obesity, and the lovelorn self often become subjects in her painting. All works mirrors the raw vulnerable self with its imperfections, sensuality and follies beyond the prohibitions of shame and often questions heteronormative perceptions. She represent the body and the emotive self within an ecosystem of its own that transmutes, regenerates and harbours other life forms. The feminine figure in its stages of transformation resonates a landscape or prakriti in a continuous state of slow fluxes with mysteries and creatures unfolding and enclosing. Mitali usually work with watercolors on Nepali handmade paper that renders my work translucence and fluidity.
