Jeff Mills emerged from Detroit techno, a tradition whose circuitry carried unmistakable traces of Sun Ra's cosmology. By 1959, Sun Ra was still working within the recognisable format of a jazz ensemble, but he was already somewhere else entirely. The compositions were considered too strange, the musicians too committed to a vision the jazz establishment couldn't quite decipher.

Sun Ra stretched jazz until it became something else. Mills has spent decades doing the same with techno.

The quartet Spiral Deluxe is where those trajectories converge.

Joined by Gerald Mitchell of Los Hermanos and Underground Resistance on keys, Yumiko Ohno of Buffalo Daughter and Cornelius on Moog, and bassist Kenji Hino, Jeff Mills presents The Love Pretender, Spiral Deluxe's third freeform session exploring authenticity, facade and performance in the modern age.

The friction in these records lies in what it means to continue an unfinished argument.

We then ask a question:

When you finally arrive where your predecessors were pointing, what do you find there?
