The grotesque is a persistent presence across human life and societies. It emerges in many forms, as horror and excess, critique and satire, distortion and asymmetry, along with humour, absurdity, and laughter. It has long served as a mode through which societies confront anxieties, expose contradictions, and imagine alternative ways of being in the world. The grotesque remains integral to the arts, literature, theatre, visual culture, everyday life, and the political sphere. Its forms shifting across time, are disruptive to established formats of beauty, truth normativity.

This session explores the many lives of the grotesque through three distinct yet interconnected sites: the histories of medieval Europe, the visual culture of social media reels in contemporary India, and the diverse forms, artistic practice, and interventions of Sajid Wajid Shaikh.
