    About The Performance

Spinning Drones is a visceral live performance by acclaimed artists Smiha Kapoor (India) and Eva Ursprung (Austria), transforming the charkha—India’s iconic spinning wheel of anti-colonial resistance—into a sonic instrument. Rooted in Punjabi Trinjan traditions and fused with electronic sound technologies, this participatory work reimagines daily labour as ritual, and tradition as a living, evolving form of resistance and care. Interactive sculptures and water-sensitive fabric installations respond to the audience's presence, inviting you to co-create through gesture and touch.

Smiha Kapoor’s interdisciplinary practice spans performance, drawing, site-specific ritual and community engagement. Her work has been presented at institutions like NUS Museum, Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, Art Outreach, and Schauspielhaus Graz. A recipient of the Styria Artist-in-Residence (Austria), Winston Oh Travelogue Award, and other international recognitions, she is also a member of The Artists Village, Singapore.

Eva Ursprung is a pioneering figure in feminist and media art in Austria. She co-founded the feminist cultural magazine Eva & Co, is a board member of IMA (Institute for Media Archaeology), and works at the intersection of sound, installation, and digital performance. Her collaborative projects have taken place in both urban and virtual spaces globally, including through the cyberformance platform UpStage, and as co-founder of Schaumbad – Freies Atelierhaus Graz.

Spinning Drones offers a rare opportunity to witness a powerful intersection of embodied memory, feminist resistance, and experimental sound.

    About the Artists

Smiha Kapoor: Born in India, Smiha Kapoor is an interdisciplinary artist and facilitator whose work bridges feminist perspectives, embodied inquiry, and process based engagement. Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, her practice evolved across Southeast Asia through a sustained engagement with performance, ritual, material processes, and community orientation. She works across drawing, live actions, site-specific interventions, participatory art and multimedia formats to explore how bodies navigate, disrupt, and co-create the environments they inhabit. Kapoor’s practice often navigates the shifting thresholds between self and other, new and old, the intimate and the public. Within these polarities, her practice strives to preserve ephemerality through marks and relics that hold the weight of contrasts and offer us containers for sense-making, connection and transformation. Anchored in care, vulnerability, and the search for wholeness, Kapoor’s work positions art as an agent of integration in the fragmented and increasingly isolated contexts of contemporary landscapes. Smiha’s artworks and performances have been presented internationally across Austria, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and India. Smiha is a member of The Artists Village, one of Singapore's paramount art colony and contemporary art group, and has received prestigious awards and residencies, including the Styria Artist-in-Residence program in Austria (2024), Nandur Gawe Residency for her showcase at Nandur Srawung, Indonesia (2023), and the Winston Oh Travelogue Award for her project Milk & 7 Almonds (2021). Her projects have been exhibited at venues such as the NUS Museum, Art Outreach, Institute of Contemporary Arts, Singapore and Schauspielhaus Graz, Austria.

Eva Ursprung: Eva Ursprung is an Austrian artist and curator based in Graz  and Vienna. She studied psychology, philosophy, and linguis- tics and has been working as a freelance artist since 1986. Her  multifaceted work encompasses installations, performances,  video art, sound works, and interventions in public, electro- nic, and social spaces. Deeply rooted in feminist perspectives,  technological exploration, and collaborative processes, her  work frequently addresses themes of communication, sustainability, and the environment.  Ursprung critically examines the relationship between techno- logy and society, exploring both the possibilities and risks of human-machine dependencies. In 1998, she co-founded the net  art group 42, since 2007 she has been a board member of IMA (Institute for Media Archaeology). She is also associated with UpStage, a global network of artists creating cyberformances (networked online performances) that take place both virtually and in physical spaces. Beyond digital art, Ursprung is known for international traveling art and communication projects, as well as collaborative and participatory art projects that engage with residents in socially disadvantaged urban areas. As a co-founder and editor of the feminist cultural magazine Eva & Co (1982–1992), she provided a platform for women’s voices in art and culture. Her commitment to fostering artistic  experimentation and community engagement is further reflected in co-founding projects like Schaumbad – Freies Atelier- haus Graz, an artist ́s run space with studios and exhibition  venues. In addition to her visual art, Ursprung is also active in the music scene, performing solo or with bands such as Lonesome Hot Dudes and Notorious Noise Brigade.
