The Sacred & The Splintered is an exhibition that asks: What does it mean for a sculpture to speak? What happens when space performs back?
In these installations, materials, gestures, and the viewer’s body collide in acts of silent yet forceful communication. This is a site of process, tension, and transformation, where affective traces of ritual practice and existential questions coexist with violence and vulnerability. Through this interplay, the installations invoke discomfort, conflict, and introspection, unfolding as heterotopic sites—spaces of otherness where danger, devotion, submission, and power converge.
At its core, Baroda-based artist Arun B.’s practice grapples with the paradox of human existence: the unrelenting search for meaning in a universe that remains indifferent. Creation becomes, for him, an act of rebellion—an assertion of freedom against entropy. Over time, his inquiry has evolved from shaping static forms to questioning how sculpture can become a space of happening: mutable, relational, and alive to the presence of others.
Working with found objects, Arun seeks to preserve their cultural and historical significance while integrating them into new contexts. Thoughts, like materials, become mediums—at once personal and collective—shaped by memory, history, and perception. His relocation from Kerala to Gujarat marked a turning point, making him acutely aware of how cultural shifts reshape the self.
Rather than occupying or controlling space, these works strive to activate it. The sculptures invite interaction, dialogue, and reflexivity. As the viewer enters, they are drawn in—or held back—by the performative tension of the encounter. The experience of art here changes with time, space, and the body’s presence, allowing both object and observer to exist in a state of continuous becoming.
The Sacred & The Splintered is, ultimately, a space where the sacred and the fractured meet—a charged threshold where memory, materiality, and the human impulse for meaning unfold in an ever-evolving process of transformation.
