Cut, Paste, Disseminate - Workshop w/ Shalaka Pai
Cut, Paste, Disseminate is a primer workshop for someone who’s heard of zines, seen them around or read them but has maybe never made one before. While young India’s familiarity with zines might be via its vibrant zine culture mostly comprising comic and art zines, the origins of zines in India are tied to pamphleteering which began as a quick and cheap way to disseminate information.
In this workshop, Shalaka Pai will kick off with a crash course into how-to-make-a-zine before going over Ambedkarite and feminist traditions of pamphleteering in India. Then, each participant makes an informational 10-14 page zine.
Workshop participants will need to arrive with a basic idea or theme for their zine. It should be a piece of knowledge or information that they think needs to be freely available to the public. This could be a set of instructions, information/explainers, or even a recipe.
A few examples to set the tone:
- How to file your taxes in India (by yourself)
- An explainer of how (insert new law/amendment here) works
- A history of student protests in India
- A guide to mutual aid and how you can help build community.
Participants are also welcome to pick through the non-fiction books in our library and condense that information into a zine.
