Andolanjeevi by Tushar Kanoi
Dissenters do not enjoy dissent, protest is not a choice. Nobody is an 'Andolanjeevi', contrary to what the government would like to believe. Protests happen when people do not feel heard through the existing channels of the state and public dissent is the only way they can get themselves heard. The government, by not listening to its people, is the one who gives birth to dissent. First they ignore us and when we protest, they crack down on us. They raze our homes down. They throw us in jail. For what? For giving speeches? For making art? For writing what we think and know to be true? Do whatever you want to, just remember, we are watching you and we always will.
As Faiz put it,
“Utthega an-al-haq ka nara
Jo main bhi hoon, aur tum bhi ho
Aur raaj karegi khalq-e-Khuda
Jo main bhi hoon aur tum bhi ho
Hum Dekhenge"
