Covering Earth 5 by Bhavin Patel
Almost everything in our immediate environment has been impacted by urbanization. Its traces are all over the place. My main concern is how this urban concept is permeating agriculture. The influence of urbanization is reducing agricultural land every day. More and more land is being permanently impervious to plant and crop development by being paved with concrete and blocks on a daily basis. In the sculpture titled ‘Covering Earth 5’, I reinterpret a traditional bamboo sieve—an everyday agricultural tool—by integrating brick and cement blocks into 40% of its surface. In this piece, the similarities between the paver blocks’ viewing pattern and that of the bamboo sieve is allegorical.
The work also critiques current urban planning policies that enable authorities to appropriate up to 40% of agricultural land from farmers—often without fair compensation
