DEEKSHA RANI PODDAR

Deeksha Rani Poddar is a Delhi-based ceramic artist. After completing her Bachelors in Textile Design from NIFT Mumbai, she delved into the world of traditional Indian textiles, collaborating with artisans across the country. While designing fabrics for several years, a yearning for a more tactile experience grew within her. Finding herself increasingly dissatisfied with computer-based design, she turned to art, initially exploring weaving on her tabletop loom. Although she found beauty in working with textiles, she sought a medium that offered greater scope for creative expression. This led her to discover the versatility of clay. Through self-directed learning and experimentation, she developed her skills in handbuilding techniques, establishing a dedicated studio space where she now crafts her unique ceramics. Alongside her continued exploration of functional wares, Deeksha has recently expanded her practice to include sculptural forms, adding another dimension to her artistic expression.

Deeksha is drawn to the mundane, the ordinary – often overlooked details, like subtle textures on a very small scale. She consciously observes these seemingly insignificant things, linking them to the memory of that particular moment. This is her favourite route to take for creating work. Later, when she recalls the memory, she tends to translate those observations into her medium. Like memories themselves, the result is often a distorted composite of fleeting moments, a reminder of their existence, much like a faded photograph. As she begins to translate these textures, hues, and forms, she finds herself captivated by the magic that she rediscovered in those seemingly insignificant moments.
