SEHAJ MALIK

Sehaj Malik is a fourth-year student at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her work follows a protocol-based approach, exploring organic mechanisms through performance drawings that are intrinsically linked to the place of their creation. She graduated from the Fresco and Art in Situation sector in 2023-24, leading her to participate in a sound exhibition at the Serres d'Auteuil and a collective installation, Tourne Sol, at the We Love Green festival in 2024. She has also exhibited in Autohistorias (2024) at the Théâtres des Expositions, Beaux-Arts de Paris; Attraction Without Traction (2024) at the Tables of Père Lachaise; Box (2024); and Private Intimacy (2023) at the Beaux-Arts de Paris.

Malik’s practice investigates space through the movements of her body, using iterative charcoal drawings to map gestures. Her work emphasizes process over outcome, allowing traces of movement to reveal a dynamic interplay between presence and absence. Each mark on the surface informs the next, creating a layered dialogue of movement and spatial awareness.

Her fascination with structured yet organic systems stems from childhood memories of time spent in her father's tractor factory in India—an environment defined by continuous cycles of motion and energy. This experience shaped her interest in the intersection of protocol and ritual, explored through repetitive patterns and gestural inscriptions. Through her work, Malik seeks to understand the spatial and conceptual consequences of movement, translating embodied experience into visual form.
