You Amongst Me by Shweta Urane
We gather information about a person in the first second we see them. But how much can we understand of a person by the way they present themselves? Sometimes a lot, sometimes not.
As an introvert, Shweta often finds herself honing in on the details of a single individual in a crowd. Observing these details may start with the most obvious—such as fashion choices or physical attributes—but goes deeper into micro-expressions. Through this practice of observation, she attempts to find a connection between someone’s outward appearance and their inner being.
This is an ongoing process that we all do on a subconscious level. While this act of “scanning” was biologically intended for self-preservation, it is now a method of judgment—positive and negative. Through her show, You Amongst Me, Shweta makes viewers hyperaware that when we are the onlooker, we only see a part, rather than the totality of a human’s identity.
