Bhavin Patel
Bhavin Patel was born in the village of Variav, now a suburb of Greater Surat, Gujarat. He comes from a family of farmers, like most households in his village, and has been involved in the physical and emotional labour of agriculture since childhood. Alongside experiencing the challenges faced by farmers under the pressure of modern expectations, Bhavin closely observed the gradual impact of urbanisation on the agrarian way of life.
These lived experiences deeply informed his artistic focus. After graduating from the Fine Arts College at V.N.S.G.U., Surat, he began to critically engage with the evolving relationship between rural life, farming practices, and the forces of urbanisation. While his early works addressed these themes directly, over time his practice evolved into a more metaphorical and object-based approach. This shift gained further depth during his postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda, supported by several internships and a dissertation related to farming.
Bhavin later participated in a summer residency at Space Studio Baroda and residancy in Mumbai at Immerse2.0, which offered him expanded opportunities to create new work and engage with wider social contexts.
For the past three years, he worked as a Studio Artist at VIS-VIS Artists Studio, Vadodara. He recently moved back to his hometown Surat to remain close to sources of inspiration and to explore new dimensions in artwork.
